Traditions At Christmas

Christmas is a time for celebrating with friends and family. There is a type of magic in the air during this special time of year and we yearn for a simpler place and time. The holidays season connects us with one another and a major reason why is because of Christmas traditions. People gather around one another to do what they’ve always done at this time of year.

So why follow traditions? What makes them so important? Traditions connect us to the past. They reinforce values, fond memories and offer a way for us to connect with one another. They don’t have to be complicated or expensive; they just have to happen on a regular basis like once a year.  Some cultures consider traditions a type of art form – a way to express oneself and their family. It doesn’t have to be nearly that time-consuming for you. Just make it a small way to re-establish a bond with family and friends.

There are many examples of Christmas traditions. The Christmas tree is a very common one that most people have during the holidays. Some families refuse to start buying artificial trees and choose, instead, to continue their tradition of selecting a real tree with their families. Usually everyone goes to the local Christmas tree yard to find that special tree calling their family name! Once the tree is home, decorating it involves another tradition. Many families collect Christmas tree ornaments over the years and they are a visual representation of the family’s history. There are usually ornaments representing first Christmases, weddings, and graduations. New pets and new homes are usually acknowledged as well. These ornaments are passed down from generation to generation.

Other types of traditions involve food. Eating a big Christmas dinner something we all look forward to! Traditional foods include a turkey or a ham with all the fixings. Mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables and stuffing all make the list. Dessert is an equally delicious affair with pies, cakes and cookies at the ready. These treats, however, are found all through the month of December and not just on Christmas Day. Everywhere you look a Nanaimo bar or sugar cookie can be spotted. Eating is a big Christmas tradition. Understandably, so is weight gain!

Christmas traditions don’t have to be structured or pre-determined. You can decide as you go along what fits in with your particular family. Maybe going on a tropical vacation will be your family tradition. Maybe making presents instead of buying them will become the new norm in your household. Whatever you decide, make it unique. Generic traditions chronicle someone else’s history, not your own. Use your family’s Christmas traditions to bond you together and keep you connected when times get rough. At the end of the day, all we have is each other.
